Am I speaking a foreign language to you? I will give a brief Alicia-esque rundown of Shinra, Jenova, and Soldier.

Rewinding far far into the past. Long ago, life was brought to the Planet by the Cetra, and they guided the Life Stream. Everything that is born, is born with the energy of the Life Stream, and when they die, that energy is returned to the planet. Constantly communing with the Planet, the Cetra lead a nomadic lifestyle. The lazy ones that wanted to settle and abandoned their brethren, became humans. One day a malevolent being named 'The Calamity from the Skies' (aka Jenova) comes riding on a meteor and smashes into the Planet, causing a disruption in the Life Stream. The Cetra gather and heal the wound, meanwhile Jenova disguises herself as the Cetra. Almost all of the Cetra became infected,went insane and turned into monsters. Though the Cetra managed to contain the threat and heal the planet, almost all of them died in the process......

Fast forward to present time. You have this mega-conglomerate, named Shinra Electric Co. Shinra consist of Urban Development, Public Safety, Science/Research, Space Exploration, and thugs, uh I mean the Turks of the General Affairs Department. The faux pas made by the Research/Scientific Department was confusing the remains of the hostile, apocalyptic Jenova for a Cetra. With that grossly incorrect assumption, Shinra concluded that if Jenova was Cetra, then it would know of the Promised Land, the proverbial jackpot of Life Stream, called Mako in its concentrated form, energy.

Making a long story short, to make 1st class SOLDIERS, men who were deemed good candidates were sprinkled with Mako, and then injected with Jenova. Kinda of like playing Russian Roulette, if they came out sane, then they gained strengths and abilities that far exceeded the average Joe-- think super human. If not, they became zonned out, zombies of Jenova's will, muttering about 'Reunions' and the like. Zack was the former, Cloud the latter.

And this, gals & guys, was a shoddy explaination by Alicia-sensei.
